Position:  Refuge Kitchen Assistant

Employee Classification:  Non-Exempt

Department:  Refuge Campus

Reports to:  Refuge Kitchen Manager, Director of Women’s Ministries

Hours: Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm

Job Statement:  The purpose of this position is to provide a staff leadership presence for evening, weekend, and/or holiday Mission meals. This position would include food preparation, cleaning, providing instruction to students in our residential program, serving meals, and working with volunteers.


  • Prepare and assist in the preparation and cooking of meals for the Refuge campus.
  • Assist and maintain cleanliness in the kitchen work area, dining room, food preparation area, refrigerator, walk-in freezer, and pantry according to Health Department and USDA guidelines.
  • Assist the Kitchen Supervisor in inventory and managing supplies.
  • Delegate kitchen and cleaning duties to volunteers and students as needed.
  • Prepare, supervise, and serve meals for special functions of the Mission.
  • Train and supervise students assigned to the kitchen on appropriate food delivery practices, proper nutrition, hygiene, inventory management, food preparations, facility cleanliness and maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
  • Follow food safety guidelines such as good personal hygiene, food handling practices, and proper sanitizing methods.
  • Assist in maintaining kitchen security such as food storage areas and equipment.
  • Familiarize oneself with the Mission’s kitchen equipment for maintenance purposes, proper storage, and for safe usage.
  • Coordinate schedules to insure kitchen is staffed, including holidays.
  • Attend Mission meetings and functions.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.



  • Prior culinary and food services experience, food service instructional experience preferred.
  • Possess a current Food Handlers Card.
  • Knowledge in food industry procedures and sanitation codes.
  • Ability to cook in large quantities.
  • Interest in or exposure to issues related to homelessness, mental illness or addiction recovery.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and operate kitchen/storage equipment.
  • Flexible work schedule and possess the ability to work independently.
  • Manage tasks and meet time schedules.



  • Emotionally mature with healthy boundaries and have the ability to model Christ.
  • Must have leadership, delegation, and organization skills.
  • Must have sound judgment, objectivity, and sensitivity.
  • Must show an ability to have a Godly concern for those at the Mission and their well-being and treat all with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills with computer skills and familiarity with current software and operating systems.
